Does ranking on Google get your law firm cited by ChatGPT?

We took the 30 personal injury firms on Google’s first three pages in Denver and checked each one against ChatGPT’s actual recommendations. If a high Google ranking carried over to AI, the pattern would be obvious. It is not.

Google search rankings flowing into ChatGPT recommendations for law firms

Almost every firm assumes the two are connected. Rank well on Google, show up in AI. It is a reasonable assumption, and for ChatGPT specifically, the data does not support it.

We focused on ChatGPT because it matters most. ChatGPT drives roughly three-quarters of all the traffic AI tools send to websites, far more than any other engine. So the question that actually pays is narrow: does a strong Google position get you named by ChatGPT?

We ranked the 30 firms 1 to 30 by their Google organic position, then measured how often ChatGPT named each one when asked to recommend a lawyer. Here is every firm, by Google rank, and how visible it was on ChatGPT.

ChatGPT visibility by Google rank
Each column is one firm, left (Google #1) to right (Google #30). Taller = named more by ChatGPT.
Google page 1 (1–10)Page 2 (11–20)Page 3 (21–30)
Read this as: if Google rank predicted ChatGPT, the tall bars would cluster on the left and fade to the right. They do not. The tallest bar is Google #1, but right behind it, five of the firms ranked 3rd through 8th were named zero times, while several firms buried on page three were named often.

18 of 30 firms were named zero times

The first thing the data shows is how empty ChatGPT’s list is. Of the 30 firms, 18 were never named by ChatGPT at all, including five of the eight firms Google ranked between third and eighth. A top-of-page-one Google position was no guarantee of a single ChatGPT mention.

Page three beat page one

This is the part that should stop any firm relying on its Google ranking. We split the 30 firms into their three Google pages and counted how many in each were named by ChatGPT at all.

Firms named by ChatGPT, by Google page

Page 1 (1–10)
4 of 10
Page 2 (11–20)
2 of 10
Page 3 (21–30)
6 of 10
Read this as: the firms on Google’s third page were named by ChatGPT more often than the firms on the first page, and the middle of Google’s rankings did worst of all. Whatever ChatGPT is using to pick firms, it is not Google’s ranking order.

Six of the ten firms on page three of Google were named by ChatGPT. Only four of the top ten were, and just two of the middle ten. A firm can sit on the third page of Google, where almost no client scrolls, and still be one of ChatGPT’s picks, while a first-page firm two spots below the leader gets nothing.

The one place they agreed

There was a single point of alignment, and it was the very top. The firm ranked number one on Google was also the firm ChatGPT named most. At the absolute peak, dominance in one shows up in the other. But that agreement did not extend even to the number-two or number-three positions. Below the top spot, the relationship dissolved into noise.

A number-one Google ranking tracked with ChatGPT. Everything below it did not.

What this means for your firm

Three things to take from this

  • Your Google ranking is not evidence of your AI visibility. Unless you are the undisputed number one for a term, where you sit on Google tells you almost nothing about whether ChatGPT names you.
  • A weak Google position is not a verdict either. Firms on page three were named by ChatGPT more than firms on page one. The door is open even to firms losing the traditional search game.
  • You have to measure ChatGPT directly. It is the highest-value AI engine and it runs its own selection. The only way to know where you stand is to check ChatGPT itself, not to infer it from Google.

The takeaway is not that Google rankings are worthless. They still drive traditional search traffic. The takeaway is narrower and more useful: your Google position and your ChatGPT visibility are two different scoreboards, and winning one does not win the other. If you want to know how ChatGPT sees your firm, the only reliable answer comes from looking.

See where your firm stands on ChatGPT

Most firms have never checked, and they assume their Google ranking carries over. As the data shows, it usually does not. The gap between where a firm thinks it stands on AI and where it actually stands is almost always large, and it is measurable.
