Voluntary Limits on Touchscreens in Cars

CBS Denver reports that the United States Department of Transportation is seeking voluntary limits on how the use of touchscreens on built in devices in new cars. Many late model automobiles come with touchscreen sound systems, GPS units, and other devices built into the dash. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, along with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) administrator David Strickland, has proposed a set of voluntary guidelines for auto manufacturers to try to limit the amount of distraction caused by these devices. The guidelines suggest that manufacturers set a limit on the number of touches it would take to accomplish any task, as well as the number of times a screen can be touched within a certain time frame.

9 News reports that a number of automobile manufacturers are trying to make driving less distracting in this age of technology. For example, Chevrolet announced that a couple of models, the Spark and Sonic, will feature a technology that will allow text to voice and voice to text translation for drivers with compatible iPhones. Chevrolet believes that this would allow drivers to receive and send email and text messages without taking their attention away from the road in the same way that more traditional email and texting would. Focus group research conducted last year showed that the vast majority of smart phone owners keep them within reach while driving.
