Police are looking for a witness to a hit and run accident that killed a motorcyclist on 8/16 near South Sheridan Boulevard and West Center Avenue in Denver. The driver of the truck was arrested Saturday and is facing charges of hit and run and leaving an accident that resulted in death. 9news.com reports state that the truck pulled out in front of the driver of the motorcycle in an attempt o make a turn and the motorcyclist struck the truck. The driver of the motorcycle, Dana Schaeffer, 47, was transported to the hospital but later died from his injuries.
Unfortunately, people die every day because of the negligence of others. You are more likely to be killed riding a motorcycle than you are in a car when involved in an accident. However, the biggest threat to a motorcyclist is not the lack of protection around them, like a car or truck would provide, but the lack of awareness that people have for motorcyclists. Some motorcyclists are killed due to their inexperience and own negligent actions but a majority of motorcycle accidents happen because drivers just simply don’t see them coming.
It is always important to stay vigilant while driving but people do not always do that. Texting and driving this year alone has caused more accidents than drunk driving-related crashes and that number is rising even though laws are in place making it illegal to do so. Car companies are now producing audio controlled features that allow a driver to receive and send texts via voice command but there are still concerns over the concentration of the driver when using that particular feature.
So how can you stay safe while driving and how can you do your part to keep the road safe for other drivers?
Be aware of your surroundings
Turn your phone off
Follow the laws of the road
One mistake can change your life and the lives of others in a split second.
