According to 9 News, there has been a connection made between wearing headphones and fatal vehicle-pedestrian collisions. Colorado state patrol reports that wearing headphones is dangerous for drivers due to being unable to hear on-coming trains or emergency sirens. Although wearing headphones while driving is illegal, wearing headphones as a pedestrian is not. Pedestrians also have a responsibility to be able to hear trains, buses and cars in order to safely walk along roadways and cross streets. The latest research done by the University of Maryland claims that about 70 percent of pedestrians that wore headphones died after being struck by vehicles. Police advise both drivers and pedestrians to refrain from using headphones or ear pieces for phones in order to reduce distracted driving.
Have you been injured in a vehicle-pedestrian collision and have questions concerning your case? Contact a Colorado pedestrian accident lawyer to further discuss your options and legal rights.
Wearing headphones while driving is illegal and one ear has to always be free even when dealing with a hands free phone. This is to ensure that emergency sirens and warnings can be heard by all drivers for the safety of everyone on the road. Pedestrians are close enough to the road that they too should be able to hear these sirens and other street noise as a warning signal.
