Child Safety Study | Denver Car Crash Lawyer

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute have teamed for a study in which they have evaluated the hardware used for child safety seat installation in 98 different models of cars and trucks. As part of the study, they also observed volunteers installing the seats. The study was conducted mainly to determine whether installing child safety seats in different vehicles was easy or difficult. Shockingly, most people volunteering for the study installed the seats incorrectly, either because installation was difficult or because they did not know how to do it correctly. It is important to note that all of the volunteers regularly use a child safety seat in their own cars. Perhaps the most surprising finding was that the top tether was used by less than half of the volunteers, and that of those who did use it, less than half used it correctly. Because the purpose of the top tether is to help prevent side-to-side movement as well as forward movement, it can be instrumental in preventing head and neck injuries in the event of an accident.

Has your child been injured in a car crash?  Speak with a Denver car crash lawyer immediately to discuss your options.

Of course, any child injured in a car accident is a frightening and terrible thing; head and neck injuries are particularly frightening, however, due to the potential for serious, lifelong negative effects. Any injury involving the brain or the spine can negatively impact a person for life, whether it is traumatic brain injury with the potential for permanent brain damage or a fractured spine, or something relatively mild such as whiplash, there is still the potential for lifelong effects. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that over 1300 children under the age of 14 were killed in traffic accidents in 2009, and nearly 180,000 were injured. One of the keys to minimizing those numbers is to correctly use child safety seats every time a child gets in a car. A great tip from the CDC is to use your seat belt every time you get in the car as an adult, so that your children see you practicing the good habit.

If your child has been injured in a car accident that was caused by someone else’s negligence, speak with an experienced Denver car crash lawyer as soon as possible to discuss your options.
