According to KDVR news, a young boy in Westminster was injured after being bitten by a dog. The injured boy, a ten-year-old who was at the home of his friend’s grandmother was bitten on the face and abdomen when the dog became aggressive. When the two boys went to see the grandmother’s dog, it seemed friendly and well-behaved with the grandson, but got aggressive with the friend, knocking him down and biting him. The dog was kept fenced in the back yard, and the boys were going into the yard through a garage door to see the dog. The injured child was taken to St. Anthony North Hospital for treatment. Police took the dog to their headquarters and placed it in quarantine. The dog’s owner showed that it had current rabies vaccination.

The American Humane Association reports that medical attention is required in almost 800,000 dog bites cases every year in the United States. In most cases, the victims of these dog bites are children under fifteen. Many of them occur when the dog is fenced on the owner’s property or otherwise restrained. Given these numbers, it is a good idea to make a point of teaching children how to be safe around dogs, even children in homes without dogs. The American Humane Association website has some excellent safety tips for children and adults, as well as tips for dog-owners.
